Hildegard of Bingen
In response to questions...
Hildegard von Bingen was born in the late 11th century. She was the tenth child of a noble family that then tithed her to the church because of the difficulties of feeding another child -(presumably this would not be the case if the tenth child was a son.)
She studied under a female hermit and began to have visions when she was very young. At an older age, she began to write down these visions along with extraordinary music that would be sung and performed by the convent she founded and became Abbess of. She is one of the few female composers known from this time and so is a source of much interest to historians, church historians, musicoligists and mystics.
We've been listening to a recording of "A Feather on the Breath of God" which is really beautiful. I highly reccommend her music to anyone who loves early church music - and maybe even if you don't. It's one of my favorite albums to put on through winter's dark hours.

that's really interesting! where did you get the recordings? i'm sure it's probably not something you can just pick up at the music store in the mall.
I'm not sure where to find it locally - it may be at a laregr music store or somewhere like Borders. I'm sure there are smaller music shops that carry her - but we got "Feather on the Breath of God" from Amazon.com.
you can add that to my christmas list, sis! :)
